Should the household tax decrease?

The SRG is currently getting CHF 1.2 billion from the pool of fees. The amount is capped: the Federal Council held out in the vote campaign on the no-billag initiative that it would return additional income to the population in the form of fee reductions. In January 2018 Media Minister Doris Leuthard exulted in the 20-minute live chat that the household tax could drop from CHF 365 to CHF 300.

It is not yet known how much more than the budgeted CHF 1.37 billion was raised in 2019. But parliamentarians from the ranks of the Greens, SP and CVP want to give the SRG more funds again instead of lowering the fees. “The SRG tax ceiling could be raised to CHF 1.5 billion,” says SP National Councilor Matthias Aebischer of the “NZZ am Sonntag”. In return, an advertising ban for the SRG broadcaster should be examined. And Michael Töngi (Greens) even thinks that the household tax was “rushed” in early 2019 from CHF 451 to CHF 365.

«The voters feel betrayed»

The reason for the claim is the declining advertising revenue of the SRG. The radio and television company must save CHF 50 million this year. And SRG boss Gilles Marchand expects less commercial income in the coming years.

Andreas Kleeb, president of the No Billag association, condemns the center-left plans. The SRG no longer needs funds, he says to 20 minutes. “The voter feels betrayed if he made his decision on the basis of false promises.” That was very questionable democratically. The SRG austerity programs would have pleased him: “You have to rethink the program for a long time.” Not all programs are necessary for good public service.

“Development was not foreseeable”

CVP National Councilor Martin Candinas fought on the front line against the no-billag initiative. He rejects the allegation that the people have been duped: “It was assumed that the budget was made up of CHF 1.2 billion in fee money and around CHF 300 million in commercial income.” was not foreseeable. «If the environment changes, a decision can also be revised. That is in the spirit of the electorate. »

The fact is that the SRG has less and less money available. He was in favor of at least partially compensating for the decline for SRG and the licensed broadcasters. “You can save without the consumer noticing, but there are limits.” The Federal Council has the final say. He should decide in summer.
