20 minutes – “Homeland” was inspired by “Criminal Minds”

While Homeland’s 8th and final season ended Sunday (April 26) in the United States, the co-creator and executive producer of the series revealed how Ben Savage was chosen to play Saul Berenson young in the penultimate episode. In several scenes, the character played by Mandy Patinkin is seen in flashbacks, in the 1980s, Berlin.

We discussed a lot about how we were going to proceed. We first thought we would try to make Mandy look thirty with special effects, but we did some tests and it was not credible, said Alex Gansa TVLine. The production then considered calling on one of Mandy Patinkin’s two sons, Isaac and Gideon, while having the text recorded by a professional actor, but gave it up.

It was ultimately the casting director of Homeland who found the solution. Judy Henderson remembered that Ben Savage had already been hired twice to play young Mandy Patinkin in Criminal Minds, the series in which the 67-year-old American was Special Agent Jason Gideon. When Ben came to read his lines, the resemblance was so strong that it seemed obvious to us to hire him. Ben and Mandy are strangely similar, Gansa recalled.

However, as TVLine recalls, Ben Savage was only content to be Saul in the 1980s, since everything he said was recorded by Mandy Patinkin in order to make the flashbacks even more realistic.
