JAKARTA – There are two main symptoms high blood pressure or hypertension which cannot be ignored. Blurred vision or dizziness can be indicators of your risk.

In a study published in BMC, blurred vision as potential symptoms of hypertension researched. The study presented the case of a 42-year-old man who suffered from blurred vision for three weeks in his right eye.

The examination was significant for decreased vision in the right eye, diffuse retinopathy in both eyes, and serous retinal detachment in the right eye. Reporting from Express, Wednesday (28/7) the patient was found to have hypertension with a blood pressure of 256/160 mmHg.

He was diagnosed with a hypertensive emergency with end-organ damage due to features of hypertensive chorioretinopathy. Hypertensive retinopathy is the most common ocular sign of hypertension and is the result of a breakdown of the blood-retinal boundary.

“It is characterized by retinal arteriolar attenuation, the so-called copper wires of the retinal arterioles caused by sclerosis and hyalinization of the vessel walls, changes in arteriovenous crossing over (nicking), cotton spots, and in advanced cases, retinal arteriolar exudation leading to stars. macula,” explains the study.

Hypertensive optic neuropathy is less common and occurs when retinal ischemia causes retinal ganglion cell swelling. These cells travel from the inner retina and combine to form the optic nerve. Swelling of the optic nerve causes elevation of the optic nerve head and flame-shaped bleeding.

Dizziness due to very high blood pressure is described as vertigo (the sensation that the room is spinning). While dizziness can be a side effect of some blood pressure medications, it is not caused by high blood pressure.

However, dizziness should not be ignored, especially if the attacks are sudden. If you experience sudden dizziness, loss of balance or coordination and difficulty walking, these can all be warning signs of a stroke. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke .
