A massive effort to contain the spread of Covid-19 was held in Manzhouli City, China after two local residents contracted the disease. In addition to restrictive measures, as many as 300 thousand city residents are also required to undergo coronavirus testing.

Strict quarantine rules were imposed in the city located on China’s border with Russia after two cases of the coronavirus were detected on Saturday (11/21/2020).

According to local media, two residents, a sanitation worker and his wife, who work as domestic helpers, tested positive for the virus, but it is still unclear where they contracted them.

Authorities immediately launched a large-scale operation to contain the virus as soon as the diagnosis was confirmed. They closed down any recent locations the couple had visited, including the local police station, and disinfected them.

Places visited by close contacts of infected partners have also been closed.

Access to the city, which is a major trade and logistics center, and movement within it is severely restricted. All operations at the Manzhouli train and bus station have been suspended, while schools and other public areas have closed. Even though residents had not yet imposed a curfew, they were “encouraged” to limit their travel.

An ambitious plan to test the city’s entire population, some 300,000 people, is under way. Testing begins Sunday (11/22/2020) morning and is expected to be completed in three days.

China has repeatedly introduced impressive, large-scale crackdowns during the year to weed out a cluster of detected coronavirus infections.

The largest occurred in the city of Wuhan, which is still widely referred to as the ‘ground zero’ of the pandemic that has swept across the world throughout 2020.

Increasing scientific evidence, however, suggests that Covid-19 has actually been detected and identified for the first time in China, while the virus itself circulated around the world at the start of last summer, with the earliest traces of the virus found in Spanish wastewater samples collected in March. 2019.
