“I know it’s a cliché, but when it works, it just works,” says the 27-year-old about his strong first round record and adds modestly: “I’m happy that I can help the team.”
Scrub and TuS: That fits! The second division professional, who was in his third year of contract with TuSEM Essen, had already considered changing the air in 2019. “Back then, my new advisor put me in contact with Lübbecke,” Skroblien looks back. He remembers the conversation with the sports director Rolf Hermann well: “After the phone call, it was clear to me that I wanted to move to Lübbecke. It was probably one of the fastest negotiations in my career, “reports the player and mentions the most important point:” I felt the people in charge have great trust from the start. I was made to feel welcome here. ”
Not entirely unimportant: Hermann and Skroblien’s paths had already crossed a few years earlier in Lemgo. “When I came to the TBV at the age of 22, Rolf was still the captain of the team,” says the native of Schwerin, who already had a personal connection when he returned to East Westphalia-Lippe.

But he has fond memories of the time in Essen: “That was a young, hungry team that you won’t find anywhere else in Germany,” says Skroblien, who with TuSEM 2020 even achieved promotion to the Bundesliga. But afterwards he didn’t feel frustrated about a missed first division opportunity: “I decided on Lübbecke early on. It’s nice to see my former teammates at Sky now and then, ”says Skroblien with a smile.
Especially since he found exactly what was important to him in Lübbecke and what he had missed a bit at TuSEM: In the concept of TuS coach Emir Kurtagic, the lightning-fast gate supplier has played a key role since the beginning of the season. “In Essen we shared the time on the left wing. If you weren’t having an absolute creamy day, it was clear that you were only playing half time. Here in Lübbecke I get the minutes, ”says Skroblien.

The transfer was a godsend for Rolf Hermann. “We thought at the time that Tom wasn’t even on the market. With him and Noah Beyer, Essen finally had what is probably the best left wing team in the league, “said the sports director of TuS, who immediately picked up his cell phone after the advisor’s advice:” It was clear to me: I have to work. ”
Skroblien has so far paid back the advance praise one to one. In some first round games, it was mainly thanks to his accuracy that the TuS, who was still a little fluttering every now and then, did not suffer a shipwreck. “His qualities helped us tremendously. He’s a top left winger who anticipates a counter attack and can decide games, ”enthuses Emir Kurtagic.

With 43 of 49 penalty throws, the newcomer was also ice cold from the point of view. Skroblien was already known in Essen for this accuracy. This season there is another factor, speculates the goalgetter: “At 27 you have a certain amount of experience. I don’t put myself under so much pressure anymore, I’ve become more relaxed, ”Skroblien provides another explanation for his run.

Skroblien was able to use the ten-day winter break until training started on Tuesday to regenerate. “After the win against Wilhelmshaven I switched off extremely and gave up handball handball. It’s easier for me than it used to be, ”he says. He doesn’t lose so much thought to his statistics. “Of course it’s a nice feeling to be at the top of the top scorer list. But I try not to give too much, ”insists Skroblien. Especially since team success comes first: “Handball is a team sport. Our third place motivates me even more to achieve our goal this season. I want to make up one more place ”, dreams the left wing, whose contract in Lübbecke runs until 2023, of the second Bundesliga promotion in a row.
Even the annoying 24:27 in the top game at VfL Gummersbach at the end of December did not shake Skroblien’s confidence. “That was annoying. We have come together well as a team, but we haven’t reached the end of the flagpole yet, “says the top performer, who not only sweeps the field but also hovers on cloud nine:” At the end of the year, my wife and I got married . We are expecting our first child in May, ”enthuses Skroblien, who is now working to ensure that his run continues in 2021.
