18 miners died in China

In southwest China, at least 18 miners have been killed by high concentrations of carbon monoxide, Chinese state television reports.

One employee survived, rescue workers are still looking for five other miners in the Diaoshidong mine in Chongqing.

The accident happened while the miners were in the process of dismantling underground mining equipment, the state broadcaster said. The mine was closed two months ago.

Mining accidents occur regularly in China. In September, 16 miners were killed in another mine on the outskirts of Chongqing when a conveyor belt caught fire, releasing dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide.
