17 Tonnes of Potatoes Causing Traffic Problems in Denmark: Deliberate Act Linked to New Law

POTATOES: The potatoes have caused minor traffic problems in Denmark.

The accused man arrived at the court in Denmark smiling, relaxed and wearing clogs. Danish media connect the incident to a new law in Denmark.

On Thursday, what is estimated to be a total of 17 tonnes of potatoes, i.e. potatoes, was dumped on the Danish bridge Storebælt in Denmark and on a motorway between Skærup and Kolding. The bridge is a connection between the capital island of Zealand and Funen.

The potatoes caused traffic problems – the police had to ask drivers to drive carefully.

Witnesses to the incident have explained that they saw a truck with the plane upright. Danish Sune Allen and Daniel Eriksen say:

– We were driving behind, and at one point we saw the truck with the loading platform straight up, and then there were lots of potatoes on the road in front of us.

There will be three different incidents involving potatoes on the road. Both eastbound and westbound on the Storebælt, as well as on Motorway E45 Sønderjyske between Skærup and Kolding.

In total, at least 17 tonnes of potatoes are said to have been dumped on the night of Thursday. The police in Funen call the incident “very very dangerous”.

Early on Thursday, the police worked with two hypotheses: whether it was an accident, or knowingly and intentionally. On Thursday afternoon, they landed on the last one.

– There was something about the way it was carried out that made us suspicious, says Kenneth Taanquist of the Funen police to Danish TV 2.

Free foot

A 57-year-old man is in custody, suspected of endangering the lives of others. The man drove the truck that dumped the potatoes. He has admitted to the police that it was a deliberate act.

Several other men are also said to be at large. The police believe that the 57-year-old had several co-conspirators.

On Thursday afternoon, the 57-year-old arrived at the court in Svendborg in Denmark wearing clogs. According to Danish TV 2, the man appeared both relaxed and smiling. The man has been declared in custody for 14 days.

The prosecution closed the doors, but the man wanted the press to be present.

According to the 57-year-old’s defender, the accused wanted open doors as it was “a political matter”.

The incident occurred on the same day that the government adopted a new bill where trucks must pay kilometer tax from 2025.

Going around the world

The potato problems from Denmark have gone around the world. Several major international media have covered the incident, including CBS and AP News.

The potatoes have also received attention on Twitter.

By Thursday evening, all the potatoes will be removed from the bridge.
