That’s good news at the start of the year: the baby, who fought Corona for weeks in Upper Austria, defeated the virus.
We reported on the tragic case for the first time in mid-November. A 15-month-old girl had to be transferred to the intensive care unit of the Salzkammergut Clinic in Vöcklabruck with severe corona symptoms.
The baby had not only tested positive for Corona, but also had another respiratory infection that occurs mainly in small children, we learned at the time.
Both infections caused the condition to deteriorate so much within days that the girl (15) was in mortal danger. Primary Christian Dopler (45) says: “The condition was extremely critical. The lungs were no longer working.”
The doctors (a team of around 15 doctors and nursing staff were on duty) then connected the girl to a heart-lung machine. “The blood runs through tubes into a machine that enriches it with oxygen. Then the blood flows back into the small body,” reports Primar Dopler.
The meaning behind it: “The lungs are relieved and can recover,” says the doctor.
week long struggle
For weeks – including over the Christmas holidays – the girl was in intensive care at the Kepler University Hospital in Linz, where she had previously been transferred. The parents had to fear for the life of their little daughter. Then, in early January, the first good news: the girl was able to leave the intensive care unit.
And now, in mid-January, the child has finally defeated Corona. As a spokeswoman for the university hospital confirms, the girl is still in the normal ward, but is no longer included in the corona statistics.

We also wanted to know from Primar Dopler how we can protect our children from Corona or a severe course. He says: “Not directly, because such small children cannot be vaccinated, but indirectly, by vaccinating adults, and thus ensuring a safe environment.”
Hence his urgent appeal: “Go vaccinate!”
