“16-Year-Old Viral Teenager Brutally Killed in New Delhi: Bystander Effect or Responsibility to Act?”

Jakarta

Viral, a 16-year-old teenager in India was brutally killed by her boyfriend in New Delhi last Sunday. The perpetrator is now being investigated by the police, has been detained for two days.

The girl was stabbed 22 times by the perpetrator, namely Sahil, and beaten with stone slabs in the streets. The video footage, which later went viral on social media, sadly shows the atmosphere around the people who did not seem to intervene with this heinous act.

People were just watching and passing by as the brutal attack took place. It appears that only one person initially tried to intervene by pulling the perpetrator away from the victim, but then he also backed away.

Bystander Effect?

The bystander effect is often associated with the condition where many people choose not to intervene or help when a crime is attacked. Usually, the more people who are ‘just’ watching, the less likely one of them is to act to help even though the situation is somewhat precarious.

On the other hand, according to clinical psychologist Arrundina Puspita Dewi, MPsi, if there are fewer people at the scene, there is a higher chance that people will help.

“Usually it’s crowded like that. So it feels like it’s not the responsibility of just one person to act. That’s why I often keep quiet, because I think there are other people around who will help the victim,” he told detikcom some time ago.

While the police who handled the case, said the girl had 34 wounds on her body.

“They were in a relationship, but they had an argument on Sunday. The teenager was planning to attend a friend’s son’s birthday. The man followed him and stabbed him multiple times and hit him with stones,” a senior official said.

The killer, an AC technician, was arrested from Bulandshahr Uttar Pradesh yesterday,

Sahil has confessed to the murder and said he was upset that his girlfriend of three years wanted to break up with him.

“He said he was angry because the girl had been ignoring him for some time,” said a police source.
