15 years in prison for man who confesses to murder of critical Maltese journalist

One of three men suspected of involvement in the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. The man, Vince Muscat, also has to pay 42,000 euros in legal costs.

Caruana Galizia was killed in a bomb attack on her car in 2017. Muscat pleaded guilty today. His lawyer said in court that his client admits to killing Caruana Galizia.

Muscat reached a settlement with prosecutors by providing information about the murder and waiving its right of appeal, local newspaper reports The Times of Malta. The two other suspects, brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio, insist that they are innocent.

Omtzigt Special Rapporteur

53-year-old investigative journalist Caruana Galizia has written extensively about corruption cases in Malta. She often pointed to politicians, including the then prime minister and a few ministers. Multiple ministers and the former prime minister are after her assassination resigned.

CDA MP Pieter Omtzigt was appointed by the Council of Europe as special rapporteur to investigate the murder and the aftermath. He encountered serious flaws in the Maltese rule of law. Omtzigt wrote last year a letter in which he called on the Prime Minister of Malta not to halt the investigation into the murder of the Maltese investigative journalist.
