15-year-old Teenager Named Time Magazine’s First “Kid Of The Year” Page all

KOMPAS.com – A 15-year-old student is set to be the first “Kid of the Year” version Time magazine.

Reported AP, teenager named Gitanjali Rao is currently still attending a high school in Colorado, United States of America.

He is a young scientist who created an application to solve the problem of contaminated drinking water, cyberbullying, opioid addiction, and various other social problems.

Rao was selected as “Kid of The Year” after being judged superior to the other 5,000 nominations.

“I am very grateful and very excited because we really see our future generations and our generations, because the future is in our hands,” said Rao. AP, Friday (5/12/2020).

Regarding this award, Time together with Nickelodeon said in a statement they wanted to recognize the leaders of America’s youngest generation on the rise.

Over the past 92 years, Time has presented the “Person of the Year”.

The youngest figure is the Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, who when crowned was 16 years old.

However, Time is now presenting “Kid of the Year” for the first time.

According to Time, Rao was chosen because he stood out by creating a global community of young innovators and inspiring them to pursue their goals.

Rao always emphasized that starting small is fine as long as you like him.

From an early age, he made various innovations. At the age of 12, Rao developed a portable device to detect lead in water.

Rao also created a device called Epione that can diagnose opioid prescription addiction from the start.

The child also created an app called Kindly that uses artificial intelligence to help prevent oppression in the virtual world.

Kindly works in a way that when teenagers type a certain word or phrase, they will know whether the word is bullying or not.

This can be a consideration, whether to edit or continue sending.

Most recently, Rao made a device to detect contaminated water. The tool makes it possible to see moving objects including parasitic compounds in the water.

Previously, Rao had told actress Angelina Jolie in an interview session Time that his scientific work started early as a way to improve social conditions.

The drinking water crisis in Flint, Michigan, inspired Rao to develop a way to detect contaminants that can send the results to his cellphone.

“I was 10 years old when I told my parents I wanted to research carbon nanotubes sensor technology in a Denver Water quality research lab, and my mother said, ‘What?'” Rao told Jolie.

Sensor technology involves carbon atom molecules that can detect chemical changes including chemicals in water.

Rao said that in the future the work will be carried out by his generation. If no one else does that later, he will.

Currently Rao has partnered with various rural schools, museums, organizations science, and various institutions to host innovation workshops for thousands of other students.

“We have science in everything we do, and I think that’s the biggest thing to say, science is cool, innovating is cool, and anyone can be an innovator,” said Rao.
