14 tonnes of amphetamine produced by ‘Islamic State’ seized in Italy – Abroad – News

Police say this is the largest amount of amphetamine ever seized in the world.

The drugs – about 84 million tablets – were hidden in industrial goods in containers. They were planned to be sold in Europe to finance terrorism, the Naples financial police said today.

“We know that the Islamic State finances its terrorist activities mainly through the smuggling of drugs produced in Syria,” the police said in a statement.

It also states that Syria has become the world’s largest producer of amphetamines in the last few years.

Police found three suspicious containers found in the port of Salerno. They housed large cylindrical rolls of paper and industrial equipment. Amphetamine tablets were found when the paper rolls were returned and the equipment was broken.

Referring to the United States Drug Administration (DEA), Naples police said the “Islamic State” is making extensive use of all controlled areas and has set up drug plants there capable of producing large quantities of synthetic drugs, including for the world market.

The amount of drugs seized by the Italian police is enough to satisfy the entire European market, the police said.

Police admit that European criminal groups, most likely the clans of the Naples mafia group “Camorra”, are involved in drug distribution.

The police hypothesis that the many restrictions imposed by the new coronavirus pandemic have led to a practical halt in the production and distribution of synthetic drugs in Europe. As a result, many smugglers have turned to Syria, where drug production appears to be continuing.
