11,000 cases since the beginning of the year, the epidemic continues to progress

Nearly 1,000 cases of dengue fever are still reported every week in La Réunion. If the South remains the most important center, in particular Saint-Pierre, the epidemic continues to progress towards the West and in particular Saint-Paul and Le Port.

The trend no longer seems to be increasing, but the number of cases reported each week still remains close to 1,000. Since the beginning of the year, more than 11,000 indigenous cases have been confirmed in the department, 429 people have had to be hospitalized and 1,328 emergency visits were recorded.

Nine people have died from dengue fever since the start of the year, including 6 deaths directly related to dengue fever. Numerous cases of secondary dengue, that is to say people who contract dengue a second time, are recorded, including a significant part in the West.

The epidemic is moving west

If the main focus of the dengue epidemic is in the south of the island, in particular in Saint-Pierre, the virus continues to spread to the West, especially Saint-Paul and Le Port. The West now accounts for almost 40% of cases.

Mosquito control even in southern winter

If the austral winter sets in, the fight against the proliferation of mosquitoes, and therefore the spread of the dengue virus, remains essential. The fall in temperatures should normally reduce the presence of mosquitoes, however the rains persist, so does the mosquito.

ARS and SDIS vector control teams continue mosquito control day and night. The mobilization of Réunion Islanders is inseparable from these treatments. Thus, it is necessary to continue eliminating the breeding places around the dwellings.

These actions are the only way to protect yourself effectively from mosquito bites. If symptoms appear, see a doctor quickly, continue to protect yourself from mosquito bites and eliminate breeding spots.
