Yes, this is Yongsan’s presidential office.

[앵커]

This is President Yoon’s third overseas event since he took office.

Can you summarize the main points?

[기자]

Yes, two days later, the day after tomorrow, President Yoon sets out on a 6-day, 4-night tour of Southeast Asia.

It is said that due to the “Itaewon disaster”, he thought about whether or not to continue with his program abroad until the last minute.

It was decided to proceed with the diplomatic program.

President Yoon will attend the ASEAN-Korea Summit to be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on the 11th, and the ASEAN + Korea-China-Japan Summit will be held on the 12th.

ASEAN + 3 is a partnership between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the ASEAN countries and Korea, China and Japan, launched in response to a joint response to the Asian financial crisis in 1997.

This time, President Yun and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang are in their places.

Let’s listen to the briefing.

President Yoon will announce the government’s new “Korea-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative” at the ASEAN-Korea Summit.

[김성한 / 국가안보실장 : 한-아세안 연대 구상은 우리 인태전략의 비전과 원칙을 바탕으로 아세안에 특화한 협력을 추진해 나가기 위한 역사적 이정표가 될 것으로 생각합니다.]

On the 13th, he will participate in the East Asia Summit and EAS, a strategic forum to talk about key security issues.

It is interesting to see if North Korea’s recent provocation and the possibility of a nuclear test will be on the agenda.

President Yoon will also travel to Bali, Indonesia on the night of the 13th to speak at a session on food, energy, safety and health at the G20 summit on the 15th.

Since other foreign leaders are expected to visit Korea, they will return to Korea on the 16th without completing the G20 program.

[앵커]

I’m interested in knowing if there will be a summit between Korea, China, Korea and Japan during this Southeast Asian tour, is there anything decided?

[기자]

The presidential office said it is coordinating the calendar of bilateral summits with the summits of other countries on the occasion of ASEAN and the G20.

A senior official explained that the bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden and the Korea-US-Japan summit, which are of greatest interest, are being coordinated.

Asked if there were any plans for a South Korea-China summit, he replied that he thought there would be an opportunity to naturally meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in the conference room.

Other summits confirmed with Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines.

President Yoon continues the summit from the day after returning home, with the Korea-Netherlands summit on the 17th and the Korea-Spain summit on the 18th.

With the recent provocations from North Korea continuing, the prospect of a seventh nuclear test before and after the mid-term elections in the United States is high.

The presidential office explained that if North Korea carries out a nuclear test during a trip to Southeast Asia, it is very likely that South Korea, the United States and Japan will respond locally as it is known that the leaders of the United States, too, Japan and China will participate in the tour

In particular, he stressed that the leaders of the United States and the Republic of Korea believe that a local response will have sufficient effect in its own way.
