◇ 1.39 million’names’ who went to Mars… Recruiting names to go to Mars in 2026
The representative event is’Send your name to Mars’. The name-sending event also took place in 2011 when the Mars probe Curiosity was launched.
If you apply from the website, NASA will engrave your name on a small chip with an electron beam and send it to the Mars probe. Although virtual for applicants, boarding passes for Mars are also issued.
10,392,295 names were listed in this Perseverance issue. Of these, the number of Korean applicants was 20,3814.
The opportunity to name the Perseverance has gone, but the NASA website is looking for a name for the Mars rover to be launched in 2026.
As of the 26th, about 8.29 million people have applied, and about 150,000 names are expected to arrive on Mars in Korea.

◇How will my voice change on Mars?
Mars’ atmospheric density is very sparse, about 1% of Earth’s atmosphere. Also, unlike Earth, which is mainly made up of nitrogen and oxygen, most of Mars’ atmosphere is carbon dioxide. In addition, the average temperature on Mars’ surface is -63℃, which is very cold compared to Earth.
Because of these characteristics of Mars, it makes a different sound than Earth. The sound spreads more slowly due to the influence of temperature, and sounds smaller because of the density. In addition, high-pitched sounds are absorbed into the air due to the influence of carbon dioxide, which occupies most of Mars’ atmosphere.
In Sounds of Mars, you can experience the different sounds in Mars’ atmosphere. If you record up to 10 seconds of sound, it changes to the sound you hear in the atmosphere of Mars.
