– Sang-young Sang-young (pictured), the honorary chairman of KCC Group, passed away on the 30th. 85 years old. The deceased is the youngest brother of the late Jeong Ju-young (1915-2001), the honorary chairman of Hyundai Group, who is called the’Chairman Wang’. – Born in Tongcheon, Gangwon-do in 1936, the deceased is one of the longest domestic entrepreneurs who have been in the business field for 60 years, rarely as a founder in the Korean business community.
In 58, he founded Geumgang Slet Industries (predecessor of KCC), which makes roof and ceiling slats. At the time, the elder brother Jeong Ju-young, who was in the automobile and civil engineering business, recommended to study abroad, but honorary chairman Chung chose to jump into the building materials business amid the ruins of the war. Since then, he has grown KCC into a global company that produces windows, glass, gypsum boards, insulation, and flooring.
In the 1970s and 1980s, when the heavy and chemical industry was growing rapidly, it became an opportunity for business expansion. In 1974, Koryo Chemical was established to grow paints and enamels and other paints, and started to produce paints for automobiles and ships as well as for construction. In 76, the company changed its name to Geumgang and became the nation’s largest comprehensive building materials company. In order to expand synergy with the construction material business, Kumgang Construction (currently KCC E&C) and Geumgang Leisure were established in 89. Kumgang and Korea Chemical later merged and became the current KCC in 2005.

The management philosophy of focusing on one business rather than growing the business in various fields led to the localization of core technologies. In 1987, it developed the first adhesive used to attach DRAM memory semiconductors to main boards in Korea. In 1996, it secured its own technology for water-soluble automotive paint that can be diluted in water. In 2003, it directly produced monomers, one of the silicon raw materials that were all imported from overseas. It made Korea the seventh country to have silicon manufacturing technology after Germany, France, the United States, Japan, Russia and China.
A KCC official said, “Honorary Chairman Chung was a manager who focused on the field by keeping the pace with the growth of the Korean economy with the spirit of industrial protection.” “We developed paints and silicon that depended on foreign countries for the localization of construction and industrial materials. He said, “It is a great contribution to the import substitution effect.” The deceased also contributed to the development of human resources by spending tens of billions of billions of dollars in private assets at his alma mater, Yongsan High School and Dongguk University.
Bereaved are his wife, Eun-joo Jo and three sons. The overall management of the KCC Group is the first, Chairman Chung Mong-jin (61), the second Chairman Chung Mong-ik (59) for KCC Glass, and the third Chairman Chung Mong-yeol (57), KCC E&C. On this day, KCC explained, “Politely refraining from harmony or condolences in consideration of the will of the deceased,” but on the 31st, the condolences followed mainly by Pan-Hyundai.
