Following the convictions of former Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye, two former presidents were imprisoned again after 23 years following Chun Doo-hwan and Noh Tae-woo.
Discussions on special pardons continue, but it is unclear whether the same fate will be repeated depending on the circumstances of the times, as well as the period of charges and imprisonment.

In April 1997, Chun Doo-hwan and Noh Tae-woo were sentenced to life imprisonment and 12 years in prison, respectively, for charges such as a 12·12 military coup and a civil war related to the May 18 Gwangju democratization protest.
They were given special pardons for more than eight months after their sentence was confirmed, and they served together for two years, including the period of imprisonment.

The dishonorable history of two former presidents being imprisoned at the same time as period prisoners has been repeated again after 23 years.
Former President Lee Myung-bak was sentenced to 17 years in prison for bribery and embezzlement of dozens of funds in October of last year.

Following this, former President Park Geun-hye was sentenced to 22 years in prison due to the Gukjeong Nongdan incident on the 14th and became the fourth former president.

However, the two former Presidents Doo-Hwan Chun, Tae-Woo No, and Myung-bak Lee and Geun-Hye Park have more differences than the same points from the allegations to the legal response method and imprisonment period.
First of all, after being arrested in March 2017, former President Park refused to attend the court since the first trial and did not respond virtually, setting the record for the longest detention of the former president of 3 years and 10 months.
On the other hand, former President Lee was released after one year on bail after being arrested in March 2018, and after being sentenced to an appeals court, he was released again after six days due to a reappeal against the decision to cancel bail. It is shortest enough.
The allegations of Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo are related to coups and political events such as the May 18, while former Presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak are also more prone to personal corruption such as bribery.
However, all four are not very different in that they have never clearly stated the meaning of reflection or apology while defining their case as political retaliation.
Public opinion evaluation of the amnesty is one of the main reasons negative.

Both ex-presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak were sentenced to final sentences, and they met special pardon requirements like the previous military presidents.
However, as the political landscape and the situation of the times are completely different from then, it seems that it remains to be seen whether the precedent 20 years ago will repeat itself.
