The so-called’self-feeding’, in which newborns are fed a baby bottle with milk powder, can lead to suffocation and is strictly prohibited by law.
It has been confirmed that the mother was caught while’self-feeding’ in a newborn baby room at a famous obstetrics and gynecology in Seoul.
The hospital resigned the employee and apologized to the parents, but the anger of the mothers has not eased.

A women’s hospital located in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul.
It is an 8-story large hospital equipped with a postpartum care center including obstetrics and gynecology.

‘Self-feeding’ took place on the 22nd of last month at this hospital, which is often visited by pregnant women around.
A mother who visited the newborn baby room at around 11 p.m. found a bottle of milk powder stuck in her newborn’s mouth, unable to properly control limbs.
It was confirmed that the person who bit the baby bottle by a newborn child was a nursing assistant who was on duty at night.
[병원 관계자 : 야간 전담을 하던 직원이 있었거든요. 직원이 잠깐 일손이 부족하다 보니까…. 중간중간 봤지만, 요즘 이슈라 하면 안 됐는데, 그때 어머니가 딱 보신 거예요.]
The mother who witnessed the scene of self-feeding raised a problem to the hospital, and the hospital initiated a self-investigation.
As a result of checking the CCTV installed in the neonatal room for a month, it was revealed that the nursing assistant was self-feeding twice more than was caught by the mother.
[병원 관계자 : 갑자기 몰릴 때가 있거든요. 그때 잠깐 일어난 일들이고. (간호조무사가) 다 이거 사죄 다 드리고, 그분도 책임지고 관두겠다….]
The other mothers who used the hospital were shocked by the news.
I paid close to 2 million won a week, and since I only believed in the management of the hospital, I even heard a feeling of betrayal.
[병원 이용했던 산모 : 산모들은 비싼 돈 내고, 가도 안전할 거로 생각하고 맡겼는데, 이런 일이 있다고 생각하니까 소름 돋고, 그게 우리 아이도 당했을 거로 생각하면 정말 끔찍합니다.]
‘Self-feeding’, in which a baby bottle is put in the mouth so that a child can eat formula alone, is especially fatal for newborns.
Experts point out that infants less than 100 days old who do not have the ability to control the amount and speed they eat can lead to suffocation.

The Enforcement Decree of the Maternal and Child Health Act, revised earlier this year, strictly prohibits’self-feeding’, and if it is violated, a fine of less than 2 million won is imposed.
