A total of 105,000 cases of damage were counted due to the so-called cocoa incident that occurred in mid-October.
The government reported that the SK C&C data center fire was the root cause, but Kakao’s core function duplication measures were also insufficient and required strengthening of it.

On October 15, around 3:00 pm, KakaoTalk suddenly stopped working and the so-called Kakao stopped working.
The lithium-ion battery in SK C&C’s data center started catching fire, all power was cut off in the process of extinguishing the fire, and there were failures to service resident companies such as Kakao and Naver.
The government considered that although the fire was the primary cause, the fact that damage to Kakao service was increased relative to Naver was due to insufficient measures to duplicate the primary functions.

Therefore, the government asked Kakao to strengthen the distribution and redundancy of the main functions to reduce the excessive dependence on a data center.
On the SK C&C side, the space between the battery compartment and the electrical system was separated to avoid as much power failure in the event of another battery fire.
The government said digital services such as Kakao and Naver were unprepared for disasters compared to their importance and required each company to report future action plans within a month.
So far, a total of 105,000 cases have been damaged by the Kakao Meal incident, and 13,000 cases of free services mentioning financial damages have been received.
Kakao said an advisory body has been formed to discuss the standard and amount of compensation for damages to free services.
