At the weekend there will be elections in Germany. The decision about who will represent the interests of the citizens in the future has been a major media event for weeks.

PR stunts and communication maneuvers are elementary components, as is omnipresent election advertising. Election posters have been everywhere since mid-August and, above all, the social media activities of the parties and candidates have been ramped up.

the Nerds GmbH, a renowned social marketing agency from Cologne, have now published a detailed study on the digital election campaign behavior of the parties on the major social media platforms Facebook and Instagram. The information on the number of ads and the corresponding expenses for this paid form of advertising are extremely interesting. There is also detailed information on possible target groups, regional features in the delivery of the ads and the addressing of potential voters. For the first time in the history of German elections, the data was evaluated using the Facebook Ads Library.

The study is free and accessible to the public. Nerds GmbH has also provided the quantitative results in an infographic (CCBY).
