From the point of view of the SPD state chairman Sebastian Hartmann, the mayor’s runoff shows a “mixed picture” for the Social Democrats. The SPD defended many town halls in North Rhine-Westphalia, but also suffered painful losses, for example in Düsseldorf or Wuppertal, Hartmann told the Düsseldorf “Rheinische Post” (Monday). In Dortmund, Hamm, Mönchengladbach, Bielefeld, Krefeld and Gelsenkirchen, however, the SPD is celebrating successes. “The election shows that our candidates were always successful where they were able to find concrete and pragmatic solutions to the problems in their community.” The SPD state executive will analyze the result tomorrow, Monday: “One thing is certain: Both people’s parties, SPD and CDU, achieved their historically worst result in this local election.” Hartmann confirmed that he would run again for the state chairman at the state party conference in mid-November.
