On October 14, 2018, a walker on the banks of the Rhine near Hamm / Rheinhessen reported an American incendiary bomb from World War II. The dud is currently lying on the bank and has already been rescued from the water by the ordnance disposal service. Today, around 2:30 p.m., the incendiary bomb is to be defused on site. An evacuation radius of 300 m was set around the bomb. Shipping will be temporarily blocked for the duration of the defusing by the water police in Ludwigshafen and Gernsheim.

Due to the low water levels, there has been an increasing number of ordnance found on the waterways in Rhineland-Palatinate in the past.

The water police warned repeatedly that if you find ammunition, grenades or similar-looking objects, keep your distance, not touch anything and notify the police immediately.
