On the occasion of this year’s Healthy Nutrition Day on March 7, 2020 on the topic of nutrition in gastrointestinal diseases, the Society for Biofactors (GfB) emphasizes that diseases of the gastrointestinal tract can lead to a deficiency of vital biofactors – especially vitamins and minerals who, if left untreated, can have serious health consequences.

Vitamin B12 deficiency possible

Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and celiac disease or conditions after bowel surgery can lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency because too little of the biofactor is absorbed through the intestine. The first symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency are mostly unspecific and lead to exhaustion and reduced performance. “If the deficiency remains undetected, neurological and psychiatric complaints will show up in the long term,” warns Prof. Karlheinz Reiners, specialist in neurology.

Magnesium also affected

Magnesium intake can also be reduced in chronic bowel diseases or conditions after bowel surgery. Long-term diarrhea also increases the excretion of the biofactor via the intestine. The magnesium deficiency itself can in turn lead to gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, vomiting, intestinal cramps or constipation. To break this vicious circle, magnesium should be supplemented if there is a deficiency, according to the GfB scientists. It should be taken into account that organic compounds are better tolerated compared to inorganic compounds and are characterized by a higher bioavailability

GfB experts warn: In gastrointestinal diseases avoid biofactor deficiency

Also with other biofactors – u. a. Vitamin B1, folic acid and zinc – there may be a reduced intake in chronic gastrointestinal diseases. Therefore, the scientists of the Society for Biofactors urge to pay more attention to the mineral and vitamin supply in patients with gastrointestinal diseases: “If there is a lack of biofactors, supplementation with suitable supplements is recommended to avoid further consequential damage” is the clear statement of the GfB.
