UMIT TIROL University trains experts who will help shape the digitalization of the healthcare system in the future

In autumn, the private university UMIT TIROL will start the master’s degree in medical informatics for the first time. As part of the course, students are trained to become international experts who will help shape digitalization in the healthcare sector in the future. The international health IT company Cerner has now announced that it is supporting the course as a cooperation partner. For over 40 years, Cerner has been developing intelligent IT solutions that help improve healthcare. Around the world, 27,000 employees at Cerner are working towards this goal.

“We are absolutely convinced of the course content! Today and tomorrow, Cerner needs colleagues who are technically deep in the subject and also have the human skills that customers rightly demand. Because, especially in the highly complex IT environment, the following applies today more than ever: IT’s a people business, ”says Stefan Radatz, Managing Director Cerner Germany & Austria and Regional General Manager, Central and Eastern Europe, about the cooperation with the UMIT TYROL University. Radatz is convinced that the support of the training of experts who proactively shape the digitization in the healthcare system of tomorrow is an excellent fit for Cerner’s overarching corporate goal of proactively, safely and innovatively shaping the healthcare system of the future ”.

For Ass.-Prof. Dr. Werner Hackl, who coordinates the partner network for the course, is working with Cerner a win-win situation. “As a university, the interlinking of topics in cooperation with health facilities and the e-health industry is particularly important to us in order to be able to offer students a scientifically sound, but also practice-oriented education. As one of the international market leaders in the healthcare IT environment, Cerner is an attractive practice partner for studies. We are very happy about that. With the master’s degree in medical informatics, which – subject to approval by AQ Austria – will start in autumn 2021, the private university UMIT TIROL wants to train scientifically sound experts who actively help shape the development of digitization in the healthcare sector. Knowledge and experience from 20 years of university research and teaching at the University of UMIT TYROL have been incorporated into the conception of the medical informatics course. In terms of content, the master’s degree focuses on core topics and future fields of medical informatics: clinical information systems, health networking and eHealth, health data and decision science as well as biomedical technology.

Organizationally, the four-semester course, which ends with the academic title Master of Science (MSc) in Medical Informatics, is divided into presence phases on the campus of the University of Hall in Tyrol, phases of accompanied self-study, a practical project in the cooperation network and the master’s thesis. Classroom teaching usually takes place weekly on two to three block days. This ensures that the course is compatible with part-time work or with family obligations. The languages ​​of instruction are English and German. In the accompanied self-study, the award-winning didactic concept of the online university course Health Information Management of the private university UMIT TIROL is used.
