The Ashaninka indigenous people from the Amônia River in the Brazilian-Peruvian border area have a common meeting at the “International Congress – Threats, Protection and Development in the Amazon Border Area”, which took place in the Ashaninka community of Apiwtxa from November 16-19 Declaration written and asked the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) to disseminate it. More than 100 indigenous representatives from the regions of Yurúa and Alto Tamaya (Ucayali, Peru) and Alto Juruá (Acre, Brazil) who belong to the organizations OPIRJ, Apiwtxa, Instituto Yorenka Tasorentsi, AJRBI, Associação Arara do Rio Amônia, ACONADIYSH, ACCY, AACAPPY, AKARIB, AARIB, discussed the challenges their communities face:

“We, the indigenous peoples and rural communities represented at this International Congress, together represent more than three million hectares of the Amazon jungle. The threats we currently face are enormous, including drug trafficking, illegal roads, illegal logging, illegal mining projects and land grabbing, and are fueled by government corruption. As a result of three intensive days of discussion and research on the current situation in our region, we jointly drafted a declaration that we, the indigenous peoples and associations present at the congress, signed. ”

The statement criticizes the threats faced by the indigenous peoples of the region. The undersigned demand, among other things, serious state efforts to protect forests and biodiversity, an end to impunity for attacks on indigenous peoples and respect for peoples’ rights to self-determination.
