“America has lost its moral compass – with serious repercussions for children and families,” said Tim McCormick, director of SOS Children’s Villages in Illinois, USA, with regard to Joe Biden’s inauguration this Wednesday. The country is deeply divided, the lines run along skin color, origin and standard of living. The situation for children and families in need would worsen more and more, they would come under increasing stress. McCormick says, “The result is a sharp rise in abuse, neglect and violence against children.”
The corona pandemic in particular, to which the state reacted inadequately, plunged the country into massive poverty. Unemployment rose to 20 percent last year, and poverty has risen rapidly accordingly. While 35 million people were starving before the pandemic, the pandemic has increased that number to over 50 million, including 17 million children. Almost every fourth household in the US was dependent on grocery stamps in 2020. Blacks and Latinos are particularly affected: 36 percent of blacks and 32 percent of Latinos did not have enough to eat in 2020 – compared to 18 percent of whites.
To find a permanent solution, America must find its way back to its values. President Biden must help the poorest quickly and courageously. The primary goal must be to secure the existence of all people, only then can they develop emotional stability and offer children a peaceful living environment and fair opportunities. “Every child has a right to it,” says McCormick.
