The president of Chega, André Ventura, defended Saturday night the creation of “another regime” for the country, with the creation of a “fourth Republic”, considering that the current “no longer serves”.
“We are not hiding and that is why we are here today to say that we want another regime for Portugal, that this Republic no longer serves and that we want to move on to the fourth Portuguese Republic,” he said.
André Ventura, who was speaking on Saturday night in Portalegre, during his presentation as a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic in the January 2021 elections, considered that political action as “a big step” for the political project he has for Portugal.
“Today we take this first big step, we are not like those who have been hiding behind the bush all their lives, we show our face, we tell what we saw and the huge change project we have for Portugal”, he said.
Throughout his speech to an audience of about 500 supporters, André Ventura launched several criticisms of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Prime Minister, António Costa, considering that the Constitution “no longer serves” the country .
“As long as there are Portuguese people earning pensions of 100 euros, we will be in pain for the Constitution. As long as there are police officers beaten in their barracks, teachers, firefighters and health professionals, we will be in pain for the Constitution,” he said.
“As long as they tell us that there can be no serious laws against corruption, we are in pain for the Constitution,” he added.
André Ventura also criticized Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for maintaining a posture of “silence” in certain matters, such as corruption, revealing that he would like to see a President of the Republic “call attention” in certain cases that happen in public life.
“Look at this from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, first he didn’t want to pronounce himself, then he didn’t think it was good or bad, then in the end he thought it was reasonable to suspend when he was already suspended. He is a kind of President who tells us how the game went when the game is over, “he said.
“Believe me, it doesn’t serve any more, it only serves to be that word of consolation, but for that I have a mother, a grandmother, I don’t need a president. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa wants to be a kind of grandfather for the Portuguese,” he added . And he concluded: “Until I see the President at the side of the Portuguese, I will say that I am in pain for Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.”

André Ventura also announced that he will present to the Assembly of the Republic a bill that seeks life imprisonment for rapists and murderers.
“Now do as you like, fail, don’t let go of the discussion, say you have mistakes, say you don’t want to, but you will have to decide,” he said.
André Ventura, who is the only deputy of Chega, elected in the 2019 legislatures, justified the choice of Portalegre to present the candidacy because it is “one of the most forgotten areas in the country”.
