Sharp Objects and Plastic Bottles: Egyptian Complaint Follows Shocking Scenes at Al Ahly-Army Royal Match

Rabat, Morocco – November 29, 2025 – A CAF Champions League match between Egypt‘s Al Ahly and Morocco’s⁤ Army Royal descended into chaos Friday evening as Al Ahly players were targeted with thrown objects, including what witnesses⁤ described as “sharp instruments” and plastic bottles. The incident prompted Al Ahly’s coach ⁢to consider removing his ‌team ⁣from the field for their safety, and has sparked a formal complaint from the Egyptian club.

The match, played at the Army Royal stadium in rabat, ended in a 0-0 draw,⁣ but‌ the result was overshadowed by⁣ the escalating violence‌ from a⁣ section of the home crowd. Video footage circulating on social⁤ media, ⁤including a ⁣post by journalist Ahmed Saeed Tantawy, appears to show Al Ahly’s Trezeguet attempting to collect thrown items while being impeded by Army Royal players, seemingly to prevent the referee from noticing the projectiles. The incident⁢ raises serious‍ concerns about security protocols at the stadium and the potential for further unrest during the⁣ tournament.

Al Ahly’s coach, while acknowledging the quality of the pitch and the⁣ overall ⁢organization of the match, expressed his dismay at the fan behavior. “I didn’t no if I should pull the players⁢ off the field to ⁤protect them… ⁣please, don’t spoil the atmosphere of football by attacking the players,” he stated⁤ following the game.‍ Despite his concerns, the coach also praised the “beautiful” stadium, “wonderful” atmosphere, and “excellent” accommodations‍ the team received during their visit. he ⁢conceded the match was challenging for both sides, and the draw ‍was a ⁢”fair‍ result.”

The Egyptian club is expected to file a formal ‍complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ⁤detailing the incidents and requesting an‌ inquiry. CAF regulations stipulate penalties for clubs whose supporters engage in violent or‍ disruptive behavior, possibly including fines, ⁣stadium closures, or‍ even disqualification from the ‍competition. This ⁢incident occurs amid heightened security concerns surrounding ‌international football matches, especially in ‍North Africa, and will likely prompt a review of ‍safety measures for future games.
