At the beginning of September, the Krefeld police, together with the Aachen police and the Aachen public prosecutor, announced at a press conference that they had succeeded in identifying a man who had been murdered 23 years ago: Wilfried Kalitz from Würselen, born in 1953. The unclothed deceased was found on December 8, 1996 on the slope of the Hauser Sandkuhle near Rheurdt-Schaephuysen (Kleve district). Since then, the Krefeld homicide squad has persistently searched for the perpetrator or perpetrators – including several contributions to the television program “Aktenzeichen XY … unsolved”. A bystander finally provided the decisive clue about the victim’s identity.

On Tuesday, September 29, 2020, the police arrested a 50-year-old from the Aachen area. On September 30, 2020, the Aachen District Court issued an arrest warrant against him, he is in custody.

The officials were able to identify the now accused through the statements of several witnesses. He is strongly suspected of having cruelly and greedily killed the victim, Wilfried Kalitz, together with an accomplice who had died in the meantime, between 23 November and 8 December 1996 in his workshop at Fronhofstrasse 6 in Würselen.

According to the current status of the investigation, the investigating authorities assume, in the sense of an urgent suspicion, that the accused and his accomplice had contact with the victim in 1996 and frequented his workshop. The dead man had a cash amount of 5,000 DM, which the accused and his accomplice had demanded of the dead man. On the basis of a joint plan of the crime, the accomplice and the accused inflicted serious injuries on the victim, including with a striking tool, especially in the head area. The beatings were carried out by the accused’s accomplice. This inflicted considerable pain on the victim, which went far beyond what was necessary to kill the victim.

After Wilfried Kalitz died, the accused and his accomplice rolled the body up in a carpet and transported it to the Hauser Sandkuhle in Rheurdt-Schaephuysen (Kleve district) about 100 km away. The accused’s accomplice had local knowledge. The corpse deposited in the sand pit was found on December 8th, 1996 and – as already announced – only identified on the basis of clues that the police received after a broadcast on the television program “Aktenzeichen XY-ungelöst” on August 28th, 2019. The accused’s accomplice died after the fact in a traffic accident.

The accused did not get involved in the allegations. It is expressly pointed out that the order of pre-trial detention does not contain a judgment on the guilt of the accused. Everyone, including the accused, has to be regarded as innocent as long as he has not been proven guilty by a final judicial judgment. The witness statements were checked by further investigations and, in the opinion of the investigating authorities, have proven to be so reliable that they justify an urgent suspicion. (470)
