Racing driver Simon Trummer has decided not to race in the United States. The Bernese Oberland doesn’t want to be in quarantine for 10 days.
Simon Trummer was supposed to contest a race of the American sports car series IMSA in Sebring on Saturday. But the 31-year-old Frutiger did not travel to Florida. “Firstly, the current corona situation there is delicate, and secondly, I don’t want to be quarantined.” Trummer could have easily entered America with a sports visa – but not back. Because those who travel to Switzerland from the USA must be quarantined here, according to the BAG. And a return flight, for example to Germany and then to Switzerland, was out of the question for the Oberlander. «I know that will be done. But this is illegal, can be noticed and was therefore not an option for me. »
For example, the Daytona 24-hour race at the end of January remains Trummer’s only start this year in the North American series. With the team PR1 / Mathiasen Motorsports he took 2nd place in the second highest LMP2 class. «Of course it’s annoying that I’m missing races now. But I don’t think that will endanger my career in the USA, after all, we really have an exceptional situation, ”says the Bernese, who starts the third year in the IMSA sports car championship.
Race in Europe
Trummer is not without work. Instead of driving in Florida, he is now driving in France on Sunday. With the Portuguese LMP2 team Algarve Pro Racing, he takes part in the 4-hour race at Le Castellet at the European Le Mans Series 2020 (ELMS). The Swiss is a stroke of luck for team boss Stewart Cox: “We are happy that Simon can be with us at the start of the season.” Trummer is also satisfied. It looks good, he said after the test days on Tuesday and Wednesday. “We are the Goodyear factory team, which puts me in a good position.” The Kandertaler will be with the Portuguese on 18/19. Will also contest the Le Mans 24-hour race in September.
Trip to Chicago
Trummer strives to drive in the United States despite the Corona crisis. “I know that I still have to show myself there and complete races.” That is why he wants to start at Road America in Elkhart Lake (Wisconsin), not far from Chicago, at the end of July. “The situation there is less dramatic than in Florida, there are almost no Covid cases.” He will then travel to Belgium, not Switzerland, where the Algarve team will race to Spa a week later and there is no quarantine requirement.
Victory and disqualification
Last Sunday, Trummer had already experienced history in the Nürburgring long-distance series VLN. In Ferrari (GT3) he celebrated the first victory for the Zurich team Octane126 on the Nordschleife. But the shock followed a few hours later: disqualification due to an unmarked tire. The team has appealed. «It has been proven that this was not our fault. We won, »says Trummer. The official decision is still pending.
