With the compact Leaf hatchback, Nissan was one of the pioneers of world electromobility. And although the second generation of this car is currently being sold relatively successfully, Nissan has often outperformed the competition. Instead of a compact electric car, it came with an emission-free SUV. This is stated by the Japanese only now in the form of the Ariya model – it stands directly against the Škoda Enyaq iV.
With a length of 4595 mm, the novelty from Nissan is only a little shorter than the planned electric SUV Škoda. Both cars are similar in width or height. The wheelbase of the Ariya is stretched to 2775 mm. And the Japanese and Czech models have one more thing in common – they stand on a platform specifically designed only for electric cars. In the case of the Ariya SUV, this is the first ever Renault-Nissan car to receive a new technical basis.
Like its rivals, Nissan relies on two types of drive. Cheaper basic variants are rear bikes, ie with a single electric motor located at the rear. The weaker version offers 160 kW and 300 Nm in combination with 65 kWh batteries (usable is 63 kWh), the stronger version has 178 kW and 300 Nm in combination with 90 kWh batteries (usable is 87 kWh). According to the WLTP cycle, the stated range is up to 360 km with a smaller and up to 500 km with a larger battery.
Versions with two electric motors, and therefore all-wheel drive, were given the designation e-4orce. The weakest has 205 kW and 560 Nm and in combination with a 65 kW battery offers a range of up to 340 km. The two top versions always have a 90kWh battery. With it, Nissan will offer a car tuned to 225 kW and 600 Nm with a range of up to 460 km, or a top version of the Performance with an output of 290 kW with a torque of 600 Nm and a range of up to 400 km.
One of the advantages of Nissan Ariya over the competition is the dynamics. “Electric cars are often referred to as accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h, making it easy to get a good time. But the Ariya is also fast in a straight line and offers maximum and usable performance in a wide range of driving conditions – such as snowy mountains or wet city streets, “says Makoto Fukuda, chief development specialist.
Looking at the technical data, his words are confirmed. Models with rear-wheel drive always travel 160 km / h, but ATVs have a maximum limit of 200 km / h. Acceleration is a matter of 7.6 seconds for a bike with a larger battery, but in the Performance version, the Ariya can accelerate to 100 km / h in 5.1 seconds. Like the Leaf, the electric SUV offers the e-Pedal function, which means that you can only control the car with the accelerator pedal – accelerating when depressed, while braking when released.
All variants of the car allow the use of fast charging with an output of up to 130 kW. The smaller battery can also be powered from a 7.4kW home socket, while the larger one has a limit shifted to a 22kW three-phase home charger.
Depending on the variant and equipment, the Nissan Ariya weighs 1.8 to 2.3 tons, while a trailer weighing up to 1.5 tons can be towed. As with other electric cars, Nissan strives to make the most of the interior space supported by a flat floor. At the back, according to a press release, even passengers can easily cross their legs, so much space should Ariya offer. It is interesting that the left-hand drive versions offer a suitcase with a volume of 468 or 415 liters in the case of all-wheel drive. Models with right-hand drive have slightly less space in the boot – 466 liters for the rear wheelbase and 408 liters for the ATV.
The dashboard as such differs significantly from the well-known models of the Japanese manufacturer and its appearance should rather evoke a café. Following the example of the Mercedes, it has two consecutive 12.3-inch screens – one for the multimedia system, the other for the instrument cluster. There is no lack of voice control, activated by the connection “Hello Nissan” or “Hey Nissan”, 4G internet connection or remote software update, which appears on the models of the Japanese manufacturer for the first time. The carmaker also boasts one of the largest transparent color displays in its class.
Nissan has practically completely got rid of conventional buttons, instead of them, for example, the air conditioning panel has touch controls that vibrate when pressed. The carmaker’s representatives also draw attention to the materials used, which are supposed to give the feeling of “premium futurism”. Like Škoda cars, for example, the Ariya has only a two-spoke steering wheel.
The front part of the car uses a V-shaped mask in design, but with the Japanese traditional three-dimensional kumiko pattern. The newly redesigned brand logo is backlit by 20 diodes, the same technology is used by the main lights and distinctive turn signals, the shape of which partially copies the mask. The wheels are 19 or 20 inches in diameter and underline the profile with a sportier look given by the sloping coupe-style roof. At the rear, the traditional logo is missing, and a light bar stretches across the entire width of the car. Nissan will offer a total of six two-tone body combinations, each with a black-painted roof.
The sale of the car will start in Europe in the second half of next year. These prices will also be known. In Japan, they already know at least an approximate basic price – Ariya starts there in the amount of five million yen, which is about 1.09 million crowns.
