BMW’s Art Cars go back to 1975 when the iconic 3.0 CSL received a colorful livery from artist Alexander Calder for its racing debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. A total of 19 art cars are currently embellishing the BMW Museum in Munich. This new M2 Competition is not yet one of them. It is probably not quite at the level that would be worthy of an official BMW Art Car, but it is guaranteed to be worth a look.
The contemporary artist FUTURA 2000 has partnered with BMW to create three unique, hand-painted versions of the compact sports coupe. He also left his mark on the interior. On top of that there will be a special edition of the M2 Competition, limited to 500 vehicles, which FUTURA2000 helped to design. The Munich-based company has not yet published any information about the price, but it can be assumed that the limited edition will be offered at a reasonable premium. The normal M2 Competition is currently starting at € 62,500. The market launch is scheduled for June 2020.
What makes these cars so special? Well, the front and rear bumpers as well as the side skirts get an individual painting and the M2s are on 19-inch aluminum in matt jet black color. In the interior, the decorative strips have a special design designed by FUTURA2000. There are also two-tone M sport seats in black and ivory white with polar blue contrast stitching and a leather Alcantara steering wheel with gray 12 o’clock marking. The door sills bear a consecutive edition number and the signature of the artist.
Should you hear from this artist for the first time, BMW will help you with a little explanation about the man behind the special M2s:
“Born Leonard Hilton McGurr, FUTURA 2000 established itself as a pioneer when graffiti met the formal gallery ecosystem in the 1980s. He quickly became known for his radical approach to the street and introduced abstraction to a completely letter-based discipline. He became part of a larger art movement that included artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Dondi White and Rammellzee. Apart from his decades of career as a contemporary artist, he has had great success as a commercial artist and has worked with numerous well-known brands. “
