88.5% fewer guests were served in tourist accommodation in May this year than last year / Article / LSM.lv

In May 2020, 30 thousand foreign and local guests were served in Latvian tourist accommodation establishments, which is by 88.5% less than in May 2019. However, compared to April this year, this indicator has more than doubled, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

Guests spent 77.5 thousand nights in tourist accommodation, which is 84.2% less than in May last year.

In May of this year, 6.3 thousand foreign guests were served, which is by 96.5% less than in May of the previous year. The number of nights spent was 28.6 thousand, which is a decrease of 91.9%.

Also, 23.7 thousand inhabitants of Latvia were served in tourist accommodation establishments, which is by 69.2% less than in the corresponding month of the previous year. The number of nights spent by local residents was 48.9 thousand, which is a decrease of 64.3%.

In May, 97.7% of respondents submitted a report on the operation of tourist accommodation, of which 45% answered that they did not operate.

The reason given was that the active tourist season had not yet begun, that the accommodation was being refurbished or repaired, or that it was idle due to a state of emergency declared for Covid-19.

In 2019, 17% of respondents said they did not take action.

CONTEXT:

In the spring of this year, the tourism industry in Latvia and elsewhere in the world was significantly affected by the spread of the Covid-19 virus and efforts to control it. Latvian hospitality industry this summer season high hopes for local tourists.

Meanwhile, several Latvian tourism industry professional organizations have sent open letter to the European Commission, drawing attention to the difficult situation in the sector as well as the lack of government support.
